Kiowa name derived from ado (tree) and e-et (big, large, great). The name was borne by a Kiowa chief (c. 1847-1929) who was responsible for raiding parties against white and Indian travelers on the Texas Plains. He was captured, imprisoned, and later pardoned. He eventually did an about-face by converting to Christianity, settling down, and running a supply train for many years. He was known to whites as Big Tree. Var: Adoette, Adooeette. (AD-O-EET)
